What is Rocket Yoga?
I started practicing Rocket yoga out of sheer amazement of this woman, my first teacher, Marie Belle. I had begun to level off in all of the classes that I was taking at my yoga studio and desperately wanted to learn more about my body's capabilities. As soon as I began to think yoga was no longer for me I found Marie Belle and the "The Rocket." Read more about what The Rocket is below, Watch the video above and join me for class on Sunday's at 8:30! Namaste!
The Rocket Yoga sequences were created by Larry Schultz to renew "energy and vitality" in the body as well as stillness in the mind. This series of postures was modified from the traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga Primary and Secondary Series taught to Larry by senior guru, Pattabhi Jois. Coined "The Rocket" by one of Larry's many students, Bob Weir of The Grateful Dead, the practice in design and effect was noted to "get you there faster." By harnessing the accessible postures within the physically intricate Ashtanga Yoga series, Larry created a class and lifestyle that is best put as pragmatic. Students are allowed to take the modifications their bodies call for when in the basic postures; often you will see two Rocket students with wildly different practices, based on level of experience, knowledge, or style, exploring the body's capabilities with the same amount of focus in the same class.
The Rocket is offered in 3 different core sequences: Rocket 1, Rocket 2, and Rocket 3. Each series is distinguished because of the effects of the sequence more so than the "difficulty" or "experience" needed to participate in them. Rocket 1 stimulates the autonomic nervous system causing the body to slow down, rest, and heal. Rocket 2 stimulates the sympathetic nervous system, activating the body's 'fight' or 'flight' response and encouraging the practitioner to use and renew energy. Rocket 2 leaves the students feeling wide awake and alert, much like after drinking a big cup of coffee. Rocket 3 is a nice mixture of both of the effects of Rocket 1 and 2, leaving practitioners feeling balanced and supreme. By offering these variations to the traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa series' Larry opened the door for students to practice particular postures freely, as needed. The Rocket is an excellent class to take if you are encouraging evolution on or off of the mat.
“The Rocket is designed to wake up the nervous system and feed it the precious prana it craves while promoting a spirit of change and freedom in the practice.” - Larry Schultz
